Google introduces more languages to Gemini Live

Google has announced it will be expanding Gemini Live to more than 40 languages to allow users to interact with more Google apps in their preferred language.

Since its launch, Gemini Live has been available in English only.

“We believe everyone should have access to the power of AI,” Gemini Experiences Group Product Manager Jules Walter wrote in a blog post.

“By expanding Gemini Live and app connections to more languages, we’re making this a reality, helping people worldwide connect with information and experience the benefits of an AI-powered assistant.”

The new languages will be rolled out over the coming weeks. Initially, Gemini Live will only be able to support conversations in up to two languages on the same device. Walter, however, assured there are plans to expand this in the future.

Users can set up their preferred languages in the Google app on their Android phone or tablet in settings, before selecting Google Assistant and Languages.

Here are the current languages supported:

  • Deutsch (Belgien)
  • Deutsch (Deutschland)
  • Deutsch (Schweiz)
  • Deutsch (Österreich)
  • English (Australia)
  • English (India)
  • English (United Kingdom)
  • English (United States)
  • español (Argentina)
  • español (Chile)
  • español (Colombia)
  • español (Estados Unidos)
  • español (México)
  • español (Perú)
  • français (Belgique)
  • français (France)
  • français (Suisse)
  • português (Brasil)
  • हिन्दी (भारत)

Using Google apps in preferred language

Off the back of the language expansion, Walter explained users will be able to connect to tools in their preferred languages. This includes apps such as Calendar, Tasks, Keep and Utilities, which Google announced in August was only available in English, as well as Gmail, Maps and YouTube.

For instance, users will be able to request Gemini to dig out a recipe sent to their Gmail and ask it to add ingredients to the shopping list in Keep. Or, snap a photo of a concert flier and ask Gemini if you’re free that day – and even set a reminder to buy tickets.

“Gemini Live is truly conversational. It’s like having a chat with a friend: you can brainstorm ideas, explore new topics or even practice for a big presentation,” Walter said.

“Gemini Live can keep up with your conversations so you can interrupt, change direction or dive deeper on a particular subject. And with 10 distinct voices to choose from, you can customise your experience and find the perfect tone and style for your conversation.”
