Lenovo at MWC 2024: every new launch

Lenovo loves a trade show. In particular, it loves launching new products, whether that’s at CES, IFA or MWC. It’s hard to keep track of everything, so here – in priority order – is what Lenovo launched at MWC 2024.

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop

We saw transparent micro-LED TVs at CES 2024, but Lenovo has decided that the world needs transparent laptops too. This is a proof of concept rather than anything we’re going to see this year, but perhaps the question you’re asking right now is “why”?

According to Lenovo, it “showcases a futuristic perspective on AI PCs, blending digital and physical environments that can enhance user experiences in ways never imagined. I’ll be honest: I can’t imagine one right at all right now, but as ever it’s great to see some new ideas in laptop world.

The first pics you’ll see are the official ones from Lenovo. I took the second, ever-so-slightly rougher ones in a meeting at MWC 2024.

Updates to Lenovo ThinkPad T series

Lenovo announced a whole bunch of updates to its popular T series of ThinkPads. These are its mainstream devices, always giving plenty of cooling for the latest Intel processors (more recently AMD Ryzens too).

At MWC 2024, Lenovo updated the T14, T14s (the “s” indicates it’s slimmer than the plain 14) and the T16 with the latest Intel Core Ultra chips. That means AI built in, along with a respectable increase in speed compared to previous Core chips. The T14 will also ship with AMD Ryzen chips, which include Ryzen AI.

Each of the updated ranges also includes a Communications Bar, which extends a couple of millimetres above the top bezel. This includes a 5MP webcam and noise-cancelling mics.

Lenovo is clearly labelling replaceable components in the ThinkPad T series

I’m delighted to say that Lenovo is also taking sustainability into account here. With the help of iFixit, it has redesigned the ThinkPad T14 and ThinkPad T16 to be more “repair-friendly”. That means replaceable memory, SSD and Wi-Fi chips, plus video guides and colour coding to make repair easier.

As a result, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and T16 Gen 3 have a provisional repairability score of 9.3 out of 10 from iFixit.

Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2

Now with Intel’s Core Ultra U series chips inside, and up to 32GB of memory (soldered, boo), the second-gen ThinkPad X12 is essentially a power-boosted refresh of what came before.

Like the other ThinkPads, its webcam has also been improved. Not with the Communications Bar, but a 5MP webcam plus a “world-facing” 8MP camera.

Lenovo ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 Gen 4

Lenovo’s ThinkBook range is more aimed at small-to-medium businesses and individual professionals than larger businesses, which Lenovo takes as an invitation to innovate faster.

This, however, is a minor update to the third-gen ThinkBook 14 2-in-1, with greater key travel (1.5mm) and a new Magnetic Slim Pen. Move along, little to see here.

Lenovo ThinkVision M14t Gen 2 Mobile Monitor (Touch)

Aside from giving this 14in mobile monitor the world’s longest name, the second-gen M14t offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and a higher-res panel. It’s now 2,240 x 1,400, with the promise of 100% sRGB coverage.

Two USB-C ports mean you can charge it and connect it separately, and it weighs a shade under 700g with a slim 4.6mm design. If you ignore the foot that keeps it upright.

Lenovo ThinkPad Executive 16-inch Backpack

We include this backpack out of completeness – we did say we’d cover all of Lenovo’s MWC 2024 launches – but also because it’s made from recycled materials. Polyethylene terephthalate materials, to be precise, or PET to its friends. There’s also an RFI blocking pocket.

Lenovo USB-C Slim Travel Dock

I know what you’re thinking. How could you keep the Lenovo USB-C Slim Travel Dock until last! Well, like Colombo, we like to keep one last trick up our sleeve, and in this case, it’s a trim, tidy dock with eight ports.

You have HDMI, three USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a full-size SD card slot and one microSD card slot (labelled TF, which stands for TransFlash, but let’s not go into that here).
