Siemens releases digital decarbonisation tool to help companies achieve net-zero

Siemens Financial Services (SFS) has launched a digital decarbonisation tool designed to help organisations achieve net-zero emissions.

Dubbed the Decarbonisation Business Optimizer (DBO), the free digital web tool models scenarios for a company’s building based on data such as its address, size and type. For example, whether it’s a hospital, office building or manufacturing plant.

Users can create their own scenarios. For example, you can set a budget and target goals (such as 10% CO2 reduction by 2030) and the tool will create a scenario so you can see how it might play out.

Siemens’ DBO tool draws on data from relevant government agencies including the US Department of Energy (DOE), the Environmental Protection Agency and the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

An estimated carbon footprint and energy cost of a facility are then calculated based on data relevant to its geographic location. You can also load data such as a facility’s annual energy use or load profile to generate more accurate results.

Siemens added that organisations can use the tool to map out different decarbonisation scenarios based on a combination of generation and storage technologies that make the most sense for their site. That might be solar panels, combined heat and power, thermal energy storage or battery storage.

The tool can also provide a summary of an estimated return on investment.

“Companies, specifically those in the supply chain, are increasingly asked to report their carbon footprint to their customers – yet many do not know where to begin,” said Siemens Financial Services President and CEO Anthony Casciano.

“The DBO addresses these barriers by taking action and puts companies of all sizes, and at all stages, in a better position to create long-term value, accelerating participation in the transition to net-zero emissions.”

The tool was developed in partnership with the company’s R&D arm, Siemens Technology, and built on Amazon Web Services. This allows the DBO to operate only when needed, lowering the workload carbon footprint.

Siemens said the tool also uses public data from Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI) to estimate the thermal properties of materials in buildings.

“ASDI works with sustainability-focused government agencies to host, and deploy key datasets on the AWS Cloud, including weather observations and forecasts, climate projection data, satellite imagery, hydrological data, air quality data, and ocean forecast data,” the company explained.

The tool is currently available for free in the US and is accessible via Siemens Xcelerator.
