Wasabi and Zero Circle develop sustainability tools for cloud storage

Cloud storage firm Wasabi Technologies and sustainable finance marketplace Zero Circle have teamed up to develop a suite of sustainability-focused cloud storage solutions to help businesses reduce their environmental impact.

Wasabi Technologies has integrated its cloud storage with Zero Circle’s invoice-based carbon footprint calculator to help businesses assess and track the carbon footprint of their data storage activities in real-time. They can then use the information to benchmark against their peers and make more sustainable business decisions.

The carbon footprint of cloud data storage can include greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the lifecycle of data centres, from the production and transportation of hardware to the energy consumption of servers and cooling systems.

An invoice uploading tool is also available to allow businesses to upload their monthly or yearly Wasabi data storage invoices. Using this, they can calculate the environmental impact of their data storage by analysing each line item in the invoice along with the location of their data storage. A detailed report of the business’ environmental impact and areas of improvement is produced as a result.

Wasabi Technologies and Zero Circle partnership

Wasabi Technologies Cloud Strategy Vice President David Boland said the partnership aligns with the company’s commitment to delivering sustainable cloud storage solutions to customers.

“Zero Circle’s carbon footprint calculation has already enabled Wasabi, our partners, and customers to gain a deeper understanding of our environmental impact,” he said.

“By integrating this solution into our supply chain, we are amplifying these benefits for everyone involved.”

The carbon footprint solutions are now available to all Wasabi customers.

“Announcing our collaboration with Wasabi marks a significant step in advancing environmental sustainability within the cloud storage sector,” added Zero Circle Founder and CEO Hemanth Setty.

Looking ahead, the two companies plan to explore other eco-friendly initiatives, such as renewable energy procurement and carbon offset programs to further reduce the environmental impact of cloud storage.
